ST.MARY’S JACOBITE SYRIAN CHURCH, KALAMASSERY
The Past
A group of Jacobite Syrian Christian fellows were members of the St. George Church, Kalamassery and the St. Gregorious Church, Udyogmandal. They were firm on their ancient faith and allegiance to the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East. Huge Majority of the members in both the Churches were followers of the Malankara Orthodox Churches. In 1970 rift started between the two factions and it grew day day and a day has come that they cannot continue in that churches in peace and harmony any more. Being a minority group they have decided to withdraw themselves in peace from the activities in that churches and bid farewell in 1975.
History
Ninteen members who were separated from the Malankara Orthodox Churches conducted number of meetings in their houses and decided to go for a church of the Syrian Jacobite faction. They have conducted a fund raising among them and able to raise a small amount to purchase land for the proposed church. First they have formed an organization by name “ Jacobite Syrian Christian fellowship, Kalamassery” and framed a bye law of its own. Rev. Fr. Varghese Karamel, Sri Mathew Paul, Sri P.K Kurian and Sri P.M. Mathew were elected as office bearers. They have located a plot on the N.H.47 near T.V.S. company of an extend of 27.5 cents. The land belonged to Rtd. Judge Sri Madhusudhanan Nair. The fellowship was in short of fund to purchase the whole land. They presented the matter before the Judge and he accepted the available fund and asked them to pay the balance amount in instalments. The deed was registered in the name of Sri. K.C. Chandy, Sri P.K. Kurian and Sri N. Joseph Cherian on 2nd September 1976. By the Grace of God and with the co operation of fellowship members and well wishers, the fellowship was able to complete the construction of a small church building on the above plot just with in 27 days time on 27th October 1976 itself.
Temporary consecration of the St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian church, which could accommodate around hundred devotees was performed by His Grace Thomas Mar Dionysus(Present Catholicos) and His Grace Geevargese Mar Gregorios, Metropolitans of the of the Jacobite church on 30th and 31st October 1976.
The main Thronos of the Church is in the name of St. Mary, the Holy Mother and the North and South Thronoses are in the names of Late H.H Ignathios Alias Third, Patriarch of Antioch and the Late Lamented Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, Metropolitan of Parumala respectively.
Inadequate room space to accommodate the increased number of members in the later days of establishment was compelled us to plan for the construction of a new church. By the grace of god the fellowship was able to purchase another piece of land of 7.5 cents on the western side of the premises.
H.H. Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East visited our church on the 9th march 1982 and blessed the foundation stone for the proposed new church.
It is a matter of honor and blessing to this church that, on his visit His Holiness promised to present the Holy Sunoro of St.Mary to this church. Later the Sunoro was cerimoniously placed in the church on 14th August 1982 by Late Lamented His Biatitude Baselious Poulose, the second Catholicos of the East along with an order from H.H Patriarch of Antioch and all the East.
A construction committee was formed to develop measures to arrange funds for the construction, with the support and initiative of our Vicar Rev.Fr. Varghese Kallappara.
Sri. N. Joseph Cherian, (Convener), Sri C.C. Varkey (Treasurer),Sri A.J Kurian,(Engineer), Late Sri K.M Chacko, and Sri P.M Mathew were nominated as the construction committee members for the new church. The foundation stone blessed by H.H Patriarch of Antioch was laid on 15th August, 1991 by H.G Abraham Mor Sevarios, Metropolitan of Angamaly Diosis.
This was a vigorous task and by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and blessings of St. Mary, the members of the committee delivered their responsibility with complete efforts and fulfilled the dream.
